5 WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON REDECORATING

Home is where the heart is, and if you’re no longer feeling in love with your space then you may be thinking about a little redecorating project. Redecorating can be a really exciting way to update your home environment and let your personality shine through, but it can also quickly rack up and become quite costly.

Thankfully there are a number of ways that you can save money on redecorating without compromising on style.

1. Determine Your Budget Before You Begin

The first step to cutting the costs of your redecorating project is to determine your budget before you begin. Starting without a budget can see little costs creeping up and with no real idea of what you can afford to spend, you risk making payments you can’t afford.

Sit down and work out what you can afford and set both an ideal and a maximum budget. Your ideal budget is what you will aim to stay within, your maximum budget takes into consideration anything unplanned, such as tipped cans of paint or repairing any damage that you have uncovered. Your goal should always be to stay within your ideal budget but your maximum budget should also be something you can still afford should you need to push the boat out a little further.

2. Use Reclaimed or Recycled Materials

Reclaimed and recycled materials can bring the cost of refurbishing and redecorating a room down significantly. Charity shops often offer great deals on quality second-hand furniture and you will find great decorative pieces at boot-sales and auctions with so much more character and history than buying them new off the shop floor.

3. Don’t be Afraid of Paint

Paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to dramatically change the look and feel of a room. Don’t be afraid to experiment with contrasting colours and create a feature wall within your space. If you aren’t sure about colours then ask your local DIY store to provide you with some samples for you to try out at home. Paint is also a great way to change the look of cupboards and shelving. Opt for the same colour as your walls to create a larger, more spacious feel or maybe try going for a contrasting bold colour to make them stand out and become a part of your decor.

4. Use Vinyl Flooring Instead of the Real Thing

Changing the floor in a room can completely change how it feels. Rip up old carpet and replace it with something fresh. Hardwood flooring, stone tiles and marble can be very costly, so opt for vinyl alternatives from shops such as fay flooring which can provide you with a realistic look and feel at a fraction of the cost. Vinyl is a great cost-effective way to achieve the effect of expensive flooring and it’s often far easier to lay meaning that you can do it yourself and save a little more money.

5. Upgrade Your Lighting

Rather than rewiring to upgrade your lighting, instead just change your fixtures and use a selection of floor and table lamps to give you more lighting options. Lighting is often overlooked when redecorating a room but even a simple change of bulb can change the feel of a space.

By following these simple tips you can save money on redecorating but still be able to have a fresh new home.
