HOME OFFICE IDEAS ON A BUDGET

We all dream of the picture-perfect home office.  One that’s clear of clutter and makes us want to start work each day.

Is this far from your reality?  For many people, a home office can easily be a room in the house that’s forgotten or just becomes the house dumping ground for all sorts of things you can’t find homes for.

If you’ve had enough of your unloved office but don’t have a lot of cash to spend, don’t despair, you can still have the office of your dreams.

Today I will share with you lots of ideas of how you can create your perfect home office on a budget.

1. Keep it Simple

Having a beautiful home office doesn’t have to cost a fortune.  Simplicity can give your office a clean, professional and chic look.  The good news is simplicity is one of the cheapest ways to create your perfect home office.

A simple white desk is often cheaper than buying a solid oak desk, for example.

Keeping your furniture simple will ensure that you stay within budget without compromising on style.

2. Buy Preloved Office Furniture

Preloved furniture is widely available in great condition.  Check out e-Bay, Facebook Marketplace or your local used office furniture outlet.   Often, large companies refurbish their offices and part exchange their old furniture, so you will find that office furniture suppliers sometimes have used furniture to sell off cheap.  It’s often still in great condition too!

This is what we chose to do and found a great desk with three filing cabinets all for less than £100 and they look perfectly new!

The great thing about traditional office furniture is it’s very solid, well made and hard-wearing.  It was designed to last, so you can feel assured that you are getting great quality at a fraction of the price.

3. Use a Dining Table

Dining Tables can be cheaper to buy than a traditional desk but can be used in exactly the same way.  Ikea is a great place to buy a cheap basic table.  Add a chair and you’re ready to go!

4. Upcycle Old Furniture

Either upcycling your own old furniture or finding some that somebody is giving away could provide you with a home office that costs next to nothing.  Old bedside cabinets make great desk drawers, old dressing tables make great desks, and chairs of all shapes and sizes can be upcycled easily to finish off your home office.

If you have the patience and are willing to put in a little bit of work, this is the best home office idea on a budget and most definitely the cheapest.

5. Keep Decor Simple

There really is no need for expensive wallpaper and decor. Simply painting your office white will make it feel fresh and it could cost you less than £10!  You can then personalise your space with simple prints that you can frame and hang to add style and character.  You can buy custom/personalised prints here for your home office in almost any style you require.

Motivational Wall Stickers can also look effective and give you a boost each day to get your work done!

6. Use Pretty Budget Files

If you paint your office white and buy some cheap basic furniture, pretty budget files can then help to add some style to your home office.

Here are a few ideas and files I’ve found that look really effective:

These pretty polkadot cardboard files can be bought on Amazon here at just over £13 for a pack of 10!

You could also make your own files using old cereal boxes and left over wallpaper! There are lots of tutorials on youtube that will show you how to do this.

Check out your local Pound Shop to see what stationery and file storage is available.  The stock often changes and there are some lovely designs keeping you easily within budget.

7. Add Simple Accessories

When we dream of a beautiful home office, we think about pretty accessories to finish it off.  The problem with this is often accessories can add a lot to the overall cost.  There are however, lots of ways you can create pretty accessories to finish off your space without the expense.

As we have already mentioned, framing simple prints and motivational quotes can look very effective but there are lots of other ways you can add accessories on a budget.  Here are some ideas:

  • Save coffee jars or buy some plain jars and decorate with ribbon and labels to hold pens and pencils.
  • Make your own candles to place in your office. (This post here will help you)
  • Add a flower arrangement, either freshly cut flowers from the garden or artificial flowers.  Both will add some colour and elegance to your workplace.

8. Buy Refurbished Equipment

If you are in need of computers and printers but tight on budget, buying refurbished products can save you a lot of money.

Amazon renewed has hundreds of products with a 12 month guarantee, providing you with a great saving on electronics for your home office.  Check out some of the offers here.

Having a fabulous home office without spending a lot doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style and quality.  Hopefully these home office ideas on a budget will help you. Your productivity will increase and you’ll have a room of your own to work in that you can be proud of!
