7 IDEAS TO SAVE MONEY AT CHRISTMAS
As the song says it’s “the most wonderful time of the year” but also the most expensive for many.
With extra food, gifts, decorations and social events, it’s not surprising the pennies start to add up quickly. Before we know it, we’ve overspent and struggling to get through January before our next pay day.
But, it doesn’t have to be like that each year. With a little bit of savvy spending and extra money making, everyone can enjoy a stress free Christmas, without worrying about how to pay for it all.
Today I will share with you 7 ideas to save money at Christmas that I hope will help you along the way.
1. Buy your Gifts in the January Sales
This is the first year that I’ve actually done this. I got some fabulous deals on Christmas cards, gift wrap and gifts.
The gifts were reduced so much, it now means that my friends and family will either receive a gift worth more than I usually spend, or I have more money to buy extra presents for them. Either way, this is definitely a win win and something worth planning for each year.
If after Christmas you don’t have any extra money to spend in January, then read number 7 below.
2. Go Shopping on Christmas Eve
This is something I’ve never been brave enough to do or wanted to do but when I was thinking of ideas to save money at Christmas, I remembered that a neighbour of mine does it each year.
She waits until Christmas Eve then heads for the big High Street stores such as House of Fraser and makes a really lovely day of it. Many of these shops have Sales on Christmas Eve, saving you up to 50% off.
Of course, she picks up some amazing bargains and great quality gifts, all at a fraction of the price she would have paid two weeks earlier. Pretty savvy I say!
3. Buy From Outlet Stores
There is something very satisfying about buying from outslet shops. An outlet store is where a company sells off their products at lower prices usually due to one of the following:
- Old Season Stock and Clearance Stock
- Customer Returns
- Customer Refurbishments
There are a number of retail outlet stores around the country and in addition to this, Amazon has outlet stores that you can purchase items from at a fraction of the original price.
This can provide huge savings off a wide variety of items from household goods, to fashion and beauty, to toys. You can check out my full Amazon Outlet Guide Here.
4. Get Cashback on Your Christmas Shopping
This one is a no-brainer and one I wish I had started years ago. You are spending money anyway, so doesn’t it make sense to get a little bit back for every pound you spend?
My favourite cashback site by far is Topcashback. You can sign up absolutely free and start earning cashback on your purchases straight away!
5. Check My Deals Page on Facebook
Deals pages will usually show products that are currently on special offer. On my Facebook Page I am known as Money Saver Mom UK. Every day I aim to save you money by finding the best deals and bargains around so that you don’t have to.
In order to see these bargains on a regular basis, you first need to ‘LIKE’ my page, then either check my page regularly or ‘LIKE’ the posts regularly for Facebook to show you the bargains in your feed.
Many of the offers I list have as much as 60%-70% off so plenty of savings to be made, but you need to be quick because often the offers are only for a short period of time.
You can hop over and give me a quick ‘LIKE’ here.
You can also invite your friends to like my page so they benefit from the savings too!
6. Buy Discounted Gift Cards from Zeek
This is a really simple way to save money. Zeek allows customers to sell and buy gift cards so you can pick up a Gift Card or e-voucher from top retailers usually with 2-25% off.
You can then go Christmas shopping and spend them at your chosen store with a ready made discount. Also if the store has other discounts and deals, you can combine them, giving you double the saving!

7. Make Extra Money
As well as saving money where possible, in order to make less of a dent in your monthly outgoings, one of the best things you can do is to make extra money in your spare time. This way, you won’t notice the extra spending and Christmas will be a lot less stressful.
