5 THINGS YOU NEED TO START A BLOG
When I decided to start a blog, I honestly didn’t really know where to start. I read lots of blogs and posts and managed to gather all the information together for what I needed. I wanted to help any newbies in the same situation, so if you want to be a blogger but don’t know where to start, I’m here to help you get on the right track.
Blogging is a great way to earn an income from home, and even after just 8 months of blogging I am already making money. In fact I made my first bit of blogging income during my second month of blogging!
So, if you want to start a blog of your own, today I will share with you 5 simple things that you need to do to get started.
1. A Subject
The first thing you will need to think about is what you want to blog about. You can literally blog about anything! It helps if it’s something that you have experience or knowledge of and also something that you are interested in and passionate about.
You will be writing a lot about whatever it is you choose, so you want to make sure it’s something that you will enjoy doing.
Some people choose to write a blog diary where they blog about their every day life. Others choose a set subject or general theme for their blog.
I chose to write about money saving and money making, family life and health because these are subjects I have extensive knowledge of and enjoy talking about.
Even if there are other bloggers writing about your subject, there is always plenty of room in the blogging world for new bloggers and you will always be able to add your own personality.
Here is a short list of things you could blog about:
Healthy and Beauty
Cookery and Recipes
These are just a few ideas to get you thinking but there are hundreds of things you could blog about.
2. A Name
Once you are clear on what you want to blog about, you will need to think of a name for your blog. This is something I wish I had taken longer over, so take your time over this one. It helps to brainstorm and just jot down lots of ideas and words on a sheet of paper. Also, take a look around the internet to see what names are already being used.
Here are a few tips when choosing your name:
- Make sure it’s easy to spell.
- Try to make it memorable.
- Don’t choose something that is too close to an existing blog.
- Use words that will give people an idea of what your blog is about.
You will then need to check your Domain Name is available and purchase it. I bought my Domain Name from GoDaddy but my hosting is with Bluehost. I actually wish I had bought my Domain Name through Bluehost too because it’s just a little simpler if it’s all in one place. Bluehost do a great package where you get both together here.
Just a little reminder, before purchasing your Domain Name, it’s a great idea to quickly check that your name is available on all the social media channels you plan on using to promote your blog. At the very least, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. You don’t want to purchase your Domain Name then find that it’s already taken on the social media platforms.
3. Purchase Your Hosting Package
You will need to decide who you want to use to host your blog. As I already mentioned, I am with Bluehost and can highly recommend them. I’ve had no problems and have found it easy to contact them with any queries. You can set up your hosting for just a few pounds a month and I have personally had a great experience with them.
4. Create a Logo
I loved this bit. Once you have chosen and purchased your Domain Name, it’s time to get creative and design a logo for your blog. You can commission a graphic designer to design something for you or, to save money, create something yourself. I created my own logo (with a bit of help from my husband) using Photoshop but for many this isn’t an option, or may be a little too complicated.
An easier way to design your logo would be to use a simple logo maker such as Logojoy Here you can create your very own professional looking logo for free in just 10 minutes. It’s really easy to use and you will get lots of options to choose from. Once you are happy with it, you can then download your design for as little as $20.
Whichever option you choose, take your time and make sure you are happy before you publish it. This will be the face of your brand!
5. Choose a Theme
Now it’s time to choose a theme for your blog. You can use a free theme or purchase one. At this point you want to make sure your blog is visually appealing to your target audience. I love pretty looking blogs, so I bought my theme from Bluchic. They have some beautiful, feminine themes and I have found the customer support to be fantastic, which, when you are a new blogger is so valuable.
You can take a look at their site here and click on the theme demos to see more details for each theme.
If you want a feminine and beautiful theme, I can highly recommend them.
So now you have everything you need to start a blog. When you are ready to get going you can follow my step my step instructions of how to set it all up here. All you need to do now is get writing!
