HAVE I CURED MY MENIERES DISEASE?

Oh my goodness, I’m scared to say it, but I think I’ve actually cured my Menieres Disease!

For the past few years I have been suffering from this awful disease which has been absolutely debilitating at times.  Until I was diagnosed, I had never actually heard of it. What was to follow was days of being in bed, not being able to drive, not being able to leave the house.  Basically, not being able to do anything for 48-72 hours at a time.

I couldn’t plan anything in advance because I never knew when I was going to be ill. My husband had to take time off work to care for my son because I just couldn’t do it.

But, I think I’ve cured it!

WHAT IS MENIERES DISEASE?

Menieres Disease is a condition of the inner ear. It can effect anyone at any age but often begins between the ages of 40-60.  The disease is named after a French Doctor called Prosper Meniere who first described the disease in the 1860’s.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

  • Hearing loss in the affected ear
  • Vertigo (dizziness and nausea)
  • Tinnitus
  • A sense of fullness or pressure in the ear

MY STORY

I was diagnosed with Tinnitus many years ago, before my son was born.  Hearing tests had shown that I was losing my hearing in one ear.  It wasn’t severe and didn’t really cause me a problem, so I thought nothing of it.

Fast forward to when my son was 3 years old. One day, we were sitting in the lounge playing with his toys on the floor. As I went to stand up, I suddenly felt very dizzy and nauseous.  I rushed up stairs where I was promptly sick!  Back downstairs I lay on the sofa for a few minutes then as I moved to get up it happened again.

This happened 8 times in an hour. At that point I started to get very worried and called my husband to come home from work.

It seemed to pass that day but I had no idea what was wrong with me.  I made an appointment to see my GP who looked at my history of Tinnitus and referred me to a specialist.  I was given an MRI scan which showed that there was nothing serious to worry about. That was when I was first diagnosed with Menieres Disease.

I remember the words he said to me.  “It won’t kill you, but it will really annoy you”, although he used different words to that effect!

He explained that there was no cure. The disease could either burn itself out in the future or get worse and go into my other ear too.

LIVING WITH THE DISEASE

For anyone who has suffered with Menieres Disease or severe vertigo, you know just how awful it can be.  I was put on Betahistine tablets, 3 times a day.  My consultant told me that the medication wouldn’t cure it but would hopefully control it. The control would mean that I shouldn’t have attacks too often.

The actual reality was that I would have an attack every 3-4 weeks which would last 48-72 hours.  During that time, every time I moved, the room would spin and I would throw up! I literally couldn’t get out of bed.  I couldn’t eat and I couldn’t move.  It truly was debilitating.

It was especially difficult having a 3 years old son who needed extra care for his severe eczema and allergies. Luckily I have an amazing husband and great family and friends who took the load off me on the days I needed help.

As I already worked from home this was a real bonus and I was so thankful that I didn’t have a job to negotiate. It proved to me just how valuable being self employed can be if you are struck down by an unexpected illness.

THINGS I TRIED

My feelings were of frustration.  I hated the days I couldn’t do anything. It also meant that we couldn’t plan anything as a family just in case I was ill.  I couldn’t tell my son if he had a party to go to or we had something fun planned because I was worried that I would have to let him down.

I’m not the sort of person to just accept things so I began to search the internet for a cure.  I read stories from people and searched for things like “How I Cured My Menieres Disease” in the hope that I would find something to help me.

I really didn’t want to be on medication because I prefer natural treatments so I tried all the things that were recommended.  I took Ginko Biloba which is supposed to do the same thing as Betahistine, cut out caffeine, cut down on salt, tried different exercises and relaxation techniques but still the attacks kept on coming.

HOW I THINK I’VE CURED MY MENIERES DISEASE

It was my birthday last year and my husband and I got chatting to somebody who was telling us about the benefits of magnetic bracelets.  I had heard about the power of magnets years ago and actually think a magnet may have helped me get pregnant with my son after being told we couldn’t have children (but that’s another story).

Most experiences I had read or heard about were from people with arthritis or joint problems so I wasn’t sure that a magnetic bracelet would do anything for me.

However, you have to remember at this point, Menieres Disease had pretty much taken over our lives and I was desperate to have my life back.

I decided to give it a go as I had nothing to lose.   I bought a magnetic bracelet and put it on my rist, making the decision that I would keep it on always, except for when I take a shower and see what happens.

Well, the amazing news is, I haven’t had an attack since that day and that was 10 months ago. I know that sounds pretty crazy and I still can’t quite believe it myself but it’s true.  Not even a wobble!

I’m still pretty deaf in my one ear but I have a hearing aid that I can use for that if I wish.  I’ve cut down to two tablets a day and I’m going to make an appointment to see my consultant in the hope he will take me off my medication completely.

SO, IS IT WORTH TRYING MAGNETIC THERAPY?

Something I haven’t mentioned is that during all this time, my husband had been getting pains in his knee joint.  We bought him this knee magnet and his pain disappeared too!

I believe in magnetic therapy so much now that I bought my mom a bracelet for her birthday as she has a little bit of arthritis.

Who knows if it was the bracelet that has cured my Menieres Disease or if it was just a coincidence, but to be honest, I don’t care.  I feel free, healthy and me again and i’m so glad I gave it a go.

If you want to try magnetic therapy, just be aware that not all bracelets are the same quality and buying a cheap one from your local market may not have the same effect.  I highly recommend trying one of the range from this company here.  Good luck and let me know if it helps!

This is really interesting! My dad got diagnosed with Labyrinthitis (infection of the inner ear) but I wonder if that was actually correct after reading your post?! I’m going to get him one and see if it makes a difference to his dizziness. He can’t look up at all without losing balance and feeling faint!

Hi Hollie. My sister had Labyrinthitis and had a little bit of dizziness but it was only mild and for a very short period of time. Suffering any kind of dizziness and vertigo is awful. I have no idea whether it will help him, but please do let me know. I really believe that magnets are good for overall health anyway so nothing to lose by trying.
